The MIAA basketball season is upon us.
The first day of the new season came on Monday, when teams across the state were allowed to hold tryouts. Next Friday, on Dec. 13, many teams will tip off their seasons. It comes fast.
The 2024-25 season will be a fascinating one to watch unfold. There was significant turnover from last season’s state champions, with many of the best players across the state either graduating or transferring to NEPSAC schools. Plenty of familiar faces return, and there should be some new ones that will catch our attention this winter.
Malden Catholic is the biggest headliner heading into this MIAA boys season, as Navy commit Matt Gaffney leads the Lancers’ quest for a historic fourth consecutive Div. 2 state championship. But who else will be worth watching?
On this episode of the HoopWise podcast, hosts Steve Hewitt and Ethan Fuller break down the upcoming MIAA season and discuss some of the top teams and players to watch.

Highlights
What are you most looking forward to watching in your first season covering MIAA?
Steve: “I’ve seen videos, I’ve heard stories about how crazy some of these gyms can be, especially in certain leagues like the Merrimack. Some of the coaches have been hyping me up in the preseason about just how crazy those atmospheres can be. … It’s no knock to NEPSAC, but there’s just a certain level of pride with these kids playing for their hometowns and their friends that they’ve grown up with, watching them, especially the top teams when they make the state tournaments and make the championships, just that level of pride and being part of your hometown. That’s something special and unique that you can’t really replicate in NEPSAC necessarily, so that makes it definitely special and unique, and I’m looking forward to following those journeys and telling some of those stories this winter.”
Any initial thoughts heading into the season?
Steve: “Just a ton of turnover and in those divisions (1, 3 and 4) in particular, it feels like it can be anyone’s game this year. … That’s kind of my first gut reaction to watching all this turnover is just how wide open those divisions are this winter.”
