The last two seasons have ended in the same fashion for Class AA Maine boys basketball: with Windham taking home the title.
There’s change coming, though.
With the offseason merging of Class AA and Class A, things are bound to be different this season. New rivalries may form, and a new state champion might even be on the rise.
Several teams have legitimate shots at the championship. Only time will tell how it all pans out. One thing is for sure, though: A South is shaping up to be a battlefield. If you need evidence of that, consider that four of the top five teams in our preseason Top 10 come out of the region. Here's our first Maine boys Top 10 of the season.
1. Windham
Class A South
Last season: 20-4
Coach: Chad Pulkkinen
Windham heads into this season looking for a three-peat after knocking off South Portland, 55-52, last season in the AA championship. With stars Tyrie James and AJ Moody — both consensus top-10 recruits in Maine’s senior class — set to return, the Eagles have both the experience and the talent to make another championship run.
2. Falmouth
Class A South
Last season: 19-4
Coach: David Halligan
It’s hard to place doubt on Falmouth, which has been nothing short of dominant in A South in recent years. It has earned three of the last four regional titles, and went on to beat Messalonskee in the Class A Championship last season. But after losing 11 seniors and star defensive guard Davis Mann, the Navigators have some work to do to remain at the top.
3. South Portland
Class A South
Last season: 17-6
Coach: Kevin Millington
After falling short in last year’s Class AA Championship, the Red Riots will look to their young talent for another chance at a state title. Two rookies — 5-foot-11 guard Leonel Despacho and 6-foot-5 wing Israel Muzela — look to break out, while 6-foot-1 senior Gabe Jackson is one of the top players in his class. Between young talent and experienced players who remember how it felt to lose last year, South Portland can make another splash in Class A this season.
4. Caribou
Class C North
Last season: 20-1
Coach: Kyle Corrigan
Caribou beat York convincingly in last year’s Class B Championship and has now won three of the last six. The Vikings lost star Tristan Robbins to graduation and moved to Class C over the offseason. But their consistent dominance, plus the return of starter Owen Corrigan, are promising signs for the Vikings. After all, it’s hard to bet against a team that lost just one game all of last season and won 15 straight en route to a state championship.
5. Cheverus
Class A South
Last season: 15-4
Coach: Richie Ashley
Despite losing 2025 Mr. Maine Basketball semifinalist Leo McNabb to graduation, Cheverus has some names that can carry it to success this season. Jameson Fitzpatrick is a high-flying 6-foot-5 senior forward with an elite ability to finish inside, while 6-foot-2 freshman Khaelon Watkins brings even more athleticism to the table.
6. Messalonskee
Class A North
Last season: 19-3
Coach: Jay Dangler
Last year’s Class A North winner and Class A state runner-ups find themselves in an interesting position. Sam Smith, last year’s KVAC Coach of the Year, left to coach at Lake Region, and star Ty Bernier graduated. Forward Merrick Smith, who averaged nearly 25 points last season, also left Messalonskee for Kimball Union. Parker Reynolds and Ryan Parent also graduated, leaving the Eagles without many of their most important players from last season.
7. York
Class B South
Last season: 20-1
Coach: Matt Regan
After claiming the Class B South title and putting up a perfect 21-0 record, York lost to Caribou by 21 points in the state championship game. Shooting guard Reece McDonald, a complete guard with the ability to put up big numbers on offense, will return for his senior season to lead the Wildcats’ redemption effort.
8. Medomak Valley
Class B South
Last season: 21-1
Coach: Nick DePatsy
York knocked off Medomak Valley to end the Panthers’ 2024-25 campaign, handing them their only loss of the season. With 6-foot-6 center Gabe Lash off at the University of Maine after his dominant season, Medomack’s key players will include rising seniors Owen Dostie and Mason Nguyen and junior Kollin Donlin.
9. Mount Abram
Class D South
Last season: 20-2
Coach: Jeff Pillsbury
Mount Abram, which reclassified to Class D, won its first-ever Class C state title at the end of last season, crushing Mattanawcook 74-48. Top scorer Bryce Wilcox graduated, but junior forward Brennan Mitchell is sticking around and can break out as the true No. 1 option this season.
10. Noble
Class A South
Last season: 21-4
Coach: Joshua Holt
Noble graduated Gatorade Player of the Year Jamier Rose, who averaged 19.83 points, 8.9 rebounds and 8.3 assists. Before falling by three points in the regional final to defending state champion Falmouth, the Knights had a strong season, losing to just two teams. Previous head coach John Morgan left to coach Sanford’s boys basketball, and first-time head coach Joshua Holt takes over Noble’s young team.
