And then there were four.
AJ Dybantsa, the Brockton, Mass., native and No. 1 recruit in the 2025 class, took one step closer to making his highly-anticipated college decision on Wednesday as he trimmed his finalists to four schools: BYU, Alabama, Kansas and North Carolina.
Dybantsa took official visits to five schools in the fall, and cut three schools from the seven finalists he had prior to this update: Kansas State, Baylor and Auburn. Kansas State’s exclusion comes as somewhat of a surprise after head coach Jerome Tang and his staff made the trip to Boston last month to watch Dybansta’s homecoming game at Emmanuel College.
It’s unclear when Dybantsa will make his decision, but it could come soon. After initially saying he’d make his decision in February, Dybantsa said last month that it could come sooner.
“That was the plan, but if I know where I’m going to go, I’m not going to wait,” Dybantsa said. “I’m just going to go ahead and commit.”

BYU head coach Kevin Young, Alabama head coach Nate Oats and assistant Preston Murphy and members of UNC’s coaching staff were in attendance for Dybantsa’s game at Emmanuel. BYU has gained steam as a potential destination after Dybantsa transferred to Utah Prep for his final prep season. Dybantsa has close ties to Murphy, who used to be his AAU coach with Boston-based Expressions Elite.
Dybantsa is enjoying a successful season so far with Utah Prep, which is ranked No. 4 in ESPN’s latest Top 25 national rankings. He’ll play his final high school game in New England on Jan. 19 when he leads Utah Prep against Montverde Academy at the annual Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Mass.
