A Shot for Life, a nonprofit organization dedicated to using sports to spark fundraising for cancer research, has ballooned since its inception in 2011. But the ASFL Challenge remains a marquee event.
Over the last two weeks, ASFL crowned its 2024 shooting contest winners in three New England states. The 12th Massachusetts iteration took place in Hanover on Aug. 3. Rhode Island held its fourth annual challenge at St. George's School in Middletown, and for the first time, Connecticut hosted its own at Joe Barlow High in Redding.
The challenge: Select players must shoot for two hours straight (with a brief halftime break), completing five different segments of free throws, mid-range jumpers and 3-pointers. The most efficient shooter by overall percentage takes the crown. ASFL hand-selects players through a scouting and interview process, and players must also commit to fundraising goals leading up to the competitions. According to founder Mike Slonina, ASFL raised more than $100,000 this summer towards cancer research.
