Vermont Academy announced Wednesday the hiring of Patrick Ewing Jr. – the son of NBA Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing – as its new boys basketball head coach.
Ewing, who played at Georgetown and Indiana during his college career in the 2000s and had a stint in the NBA, has made several coaching stops in the professional ranks since, most recently in the National Basketball League (NBL) in Australasia.
“From the moment Patrick stepped on campus, there was a genuine connection to Vermont Academy and what makes our community so special,” Vermont Academy Athletic Director Karen Henry said in a statement. “His basketball experience speaks for itself, but what impressed us most was his character, his passion for developing young people, and his vision for our program. We care deeply about these young men and their experience here, and we truly believe Patrick is the right person to lead this next chapter of Vermont Academy basketball. We couldn't be more excited about what lies ahead.”
Ewing started his college career at Indiana in 2005, playing two seasons there before transferring to Georgetown, his father’s alma mater, where he helped the Hoyas reach the 2007 Final Four and was named the Big East Sixth Man of the Year in 2008. He was drafted in the second round of the 2008 NBA Draft by the Sacramento Kings. He played three years in the D-League before appearing in seven games with the New Orleans Pelicans in 2011.
Ewing later embarked on a coaching career that included multiple stops in the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL). He was named the inaugural head coach and general manager of the expansion Newfoundland Growlers in 2022 and later joined the South West Metro Pirates in the NBL1 North as its lead assistant and then head coach, and the Brisbane Bullets in the NBL as an assistant coach.
Ewing takes over as the head coach at Vermont Academy after Connor Merrill stepped down in early September. Merrill was the initial successor to John Zall, who took the head-coaching job at St. Mark’s in June after spending five seasons at VA, where he led the program to the Class AAA championship in 2024.
Ewing is the fourth new head coach in Class AAA this season, joining Newman’s Justin Perron, Bridgton’s Paris Horne and Brewster’s Luke Rosinski in the top division of NEPSAC basketball.
