Joson Sanon is heading west this fall to play college basketball in the desert. Just not how he initially intended.
Sanon, a native of Fall River, Mass., and the No. 22-ranked player in the class of 2024 by ESPN, made a verbal commitment in March to attend Arizona.
But soon after Arizona star Caleb Love, last season’s Pac-12 Player of the Year, announced in late May that he would be withdrawing his name from the NBA Draft and returning to the Wildcats next season, Sanon flipped his commitment to rival Arizona State.
Sanon, a 6-foot-5 wing, also considered Kentucky, Kansas and UConn in the recruiting process, and he’s expected to make an instant impact with the Sun Devils.
Sanon played his freshman season at Durfee High School in Fall River before transferring to Vermont Academy, where he became one of the best players in the region. He was the NEPSAC AAA Player of the Year last season as he led his team to a championship. Sanon is considered one of the best shooters and most potent scorers in his class.
Sanon was originally in the class of 2025, but announced his intention to graduate high school this summer and reclassify to the 2024 class when he verbally committed to Arizona. He continued playing with BABC (Boston Amateur Basketball Club) on the AAU circuit this spring, and he dominated with some monster scoring performances.
Sanon is expected to be one-and-done at Arizona State. He’ll join a loaded Sun Devils recruiting class assembled by coach Bobby Hurley that also includes five-star center Jayden Quaintance and four-star forward Amier Ali.
