The MIAA girls basketball season is moving fast. We’re already less than a month away from the end of the regular season.

What can we take away from the winter so far?

Steve Hewitt and Ethan Fuller reconvene on the HoopWise Podcast to discuss. They hit on the championship picture in the top divisions and teams that have surprised.

Have your thoughts on the Division 2 championship picture changed since the season started?

Ethan: “I would argue that Medfield has somehow separated itself even further from everyone else, just because they are even better
than I thought they were. But if we go to Division 2 — Whitman-Hanson has not lost in-state. Their only loss came against a California
team over winter break. Really impressed by them. Minnechaug has come kind of out of nowhere. … I think you could make a case for almost everyone in the top 15 of the D2 power rankings to make at least a quarterfinal game. That’s how competitive the rest of the race will be besides Medfield. So yeah, if you take Medfield out of the picture, it’s a really exciting division.”

Jae Scott and Naya Annigeri are leading the Player of the Year conversation. Who else would you mention?

Ethan: “Kayla Dunlap at Natick. If you’re going to award a single breakout or Most Improved Player of some sort, it’s gotta be her. I believe this was last week or maybe a week and a half ago at this point, but she was averaging almost 24 a game for a Natick team that has been very, very good. She’s only a sophomore. Once we turn the page from school season to college prospect (scouting), like we shift our lens that way — I think she’s straight up one of the better prospects in the sophomore class in New England at this point.”
