Lucas Morillo, a consensus 4-star guard at Newman and one of the top prospects in New England, announced his commitment to Illinois on Friday.
The 6-foot-7 playmaking guard has experienced a rapid rise in national attention over the last year. He’s now ranked 73rd in the 2026 class by ESPN and 50th by 247 Sports. Morillo chose Illinois from a list of six finalists that included Marquette, UCLA, Texas, Minnesota and Virginia.
A native of Mount Vernon, N.Y., Morillo transferred to Newman in summer 2024 and ascended from unheralded name to premier NEPSAC talent. He led Newman to the Class AAA championship and won our Class AAA Player of the Year award, averaging 15.1 points, 8.8 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game.
Morillo continued building hype during the AAU season with City Rocks. He also played up on the Dominican Republic’s U19 national team in this summer’s FIBA U19 World Cup.
