John McNamara was initially uncertain if he wanted to pursue the head-coaching vacancy at Newton North. More than anyone, he understood the big shoes he’d have to fill after the sudden departure of Paul Connolly – who stepped down after 24 legendary seasons on March 18 – and the weight of responsibility that comes with leading one of the best MIAA boys basketball programs.
But ultimately, it was an opportunity McNamara couldn’t pass on, especially given how close it is to his heart. McNamara, who’s been part of the program since he was 8 years old, was a member of Newton North’s 2005 state championship team before returning to the school in 2009, when he’s coached at various levels of the program since. On May 22, after multiple rounds of interviews and a process he described as a “whirlwind” following Connolly’s resignation, McNamara was announced as the Tigers’ new head coach.
“I think I would have regretted it if I hadn’t gone through the process,” McNamara said. “Obviously now I’m really glad I did. I’m excited to get started and kind of put my own mark on things and continue the success we’ve had.”
It will certainly be a high standard for McNamara to sustain. Connolly left his mark as one of the best coaches in state history as he amassed 456 career victories, including back-to-back state titles in 2005 and 2006. He nearly captured a third last season after leading Newton North to 24 wins and a berth in the state championship game, where the Tigers lost to Franklin in a thriller.
