An action-packed season of MIAA basketball came to a thrilling conclusion with last weekend’s state championships.

Across three days, we saw 10 teams crowned, including several repeat winners and also some first-time champions.

Steve Hewitt and Ethan Fuller take a look back at the dramatic weekend. They recount buzzer-beaters, breakout games and two instant classics in Division 1.

They also take a look at some of the players who asserted themselves as MIAA stars.

What did you see from Bella Owumi in her Div. 3 state championship performance?

Ethan: “Every time I look for her to add a skill, it’s there. And for this year, it was the threes and being a consistent shooter, someone who’s going to make teams pay because they don’t want to give up the drive. In this game, Norwell, it’s not like they played horrendously bad defense or anything. They just were content to not close out too hard, just kind of keep a hand up, make her pay behind
the arc — and she makes four threes.”

How did Dom Taylor step up to help Somerset Berkley win the Div. 2 title?

Steve: “His two-way effort on Sunday — he had 17 points, but his defense on Malden Catholic star Matt Gaffney who we’ve talked a lot about (was great). (Gaffney) only ends up with seven points. He had no points at halftime. Their mission was to limit him because they know he makes them go, he’s a three-time champion for a reason, one of the best players in the state, the only Div. 1 commit in the
state for a reason. They played a Diamond-and-1 on Matt right from the start and just never let him get comfortable. Don Taylor never
left him. He was just following him around.
