WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — The championship trophy had already been presented, and the celebrations were dying down. Or so Tom Espinosa thought. Standing near midcourt, the Putnam Science head coach was oblivious to what was approaching him from behind, as a group of his players dumped a Gatorade jug full of water over him.
Espinosa soaked another one in.
It doesn’t get old for Espinosa and Putnam Science, which won yet another national prep championship on Thursday night, clinching the title with a 79-72 victory over St. Thomas More at the University of Saint Joseph. It’s the Mustangs’ third national championship in the last four years and fifth since 2018, and it also capped a dominant winter as they closed the season with 33 consecutive wins. Putnam (41-2) never lost after Nov. 17.
“Sometimes you just have that magic,” Espinosa said.
