Hours after they had secured a marquee win, Northfield Mount Hermon head coach Mike Shelton and his team were standing outside in the cold. It was around 6 a.m. Sunday morning on Dec. 8, and NMH had been evacuated from its hotel in New Jersey because of a fire alarm.
At first, Shelton didn’t think much of it. He didn’t see a fire, and he thought there was a chance someone might have been playing a prank.
“Obviously, it wasn’t one of my kids because they’re dead asleep right now,” Shelton said. “You’re like, ‘What knucklehead is playing a joke and pulling the alarm?’
“You feel like it’s going to go off soon, but it kept going and going.”
