Holy Cross women's basketball head coach Maureen Magarity is stepping down from her position, effective immediately, the school announced in a statement Tuesday. Assistant Candice Green will assume interim head coach duties for the back-to-back reigning Patriot League champion Crusaders.
Magarity cited family reasons for her sudden departure.
"It is with mixed emotions that I am stepping down from my position as head women’s basketball coach at Holy Cross,” she said in the statement. “While I know the timing is not ideal, after much thought I’ve decided to prioritize and focus on my family. I have truly loved coaching for the past 21 years but I feel excited to be more present for my daughters. I will treasure all the memories we’ve made over the past four years on The Hill and am so grateful for the players, coaches and fans that made this decision so difficult. I am extremely proud of what we have accomplished on the biggest stage and know the program will continue to thrive. Thank you to President Rougeau, Kit Hughes and Rose Shea for all of your support over the years.”
Magarity spent four years at Holy Cross, leading the Crusaders to some of their greatest heights as a team. Holy Cross defeated Boston University in the last two Patriot League championships to book their first March Madness appearances since 2007. Last spring, the Crusaders defeated UT Martin in the First Four of the NCAA Tournament, leading to a first-round matchup against Caitlin Clark and Iowa on national television.
